Schumer Slams House Vote, Scalise Urges Senate to Take it Seriously
The US Senate has voted to end the impeachment case against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, bypassing procedural votes with a procedural vote. The House of Representatives voted on Tuesday night to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the US-Mexico border.
The impeachment trial will begin at 1 pm, with all 100 senators sworn in as jurors. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has slammed the House vote, calling it "a political stunt." House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has urged the Senate to take the impeachment seriously.
The impeachment resolution was passed by a vote of 230-197, with all Republicans and 9 Democrats voting in favor. The resolution accuses Mayorkas of "dereliction of duty" and "incompetence" in his handling of the border.
