Senate Rejects Impeachment Articles Against Homeland Security Secretary

Delayed Impeachment Articles Delivered

House Republicans Vote Against Mayorkas

After months of delay, House Republicans finally delivered articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate on Tuesday. The Republican-led House impeached Mayorkas in February on charges of "failure to secure the border" and "dereliction of duty." However, the Senate has rejected both articles of impeachment, effectively ending the effort to remove Mayorkas from office.

House Narrowly Votes to Impeach

In February, the House of Representatives voted narrowly to impeach Mayorkas, with 240 Republicans voting in favor and 181 Democrats voting against. The articles of impeachment alleged that Mayorkas had failed to secure the southern border, which has seen a surge in illegal immigration in recent years. The articles also accused Mayorkas of dereliction of duty, claiming that he had not taken sufficient steps to address the humanitarian crisis at the border.

Senate Rejects Articles of Impeachment

The Senate began its impeachment trial of Mayorkas on Tuesday, but the trial lasted only a week. On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate voted to reject both articles of impeachment, with all 50 Democrats and 12 Republicans voting against conviction. The vote was a major defeat for Republicans, who had hoped to use the impeachment process to remove Mayorkas from office. However, the Senate's decision to reject the articles of impeachment means that Mayorkas will remain in his position as Homeland Security Secretary.
