Geographical Description

The West Indies, a subregion of North America, is surrounded by the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It comprises 13 independent island nations.

Location

The islands form a crescent-shaped group, separating the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south.

Geological Formation

The West Indies is an archipelago consisting of 7 main islands and around 170 additional named islets and rocks. Some of the islands are coral islands, while others are volcanic or have a combination of both.

Distance from Cape Hatteras

The islands are situated approximately 650 miles (1050 km) east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
